Frankfurt am Main 2021
Campus Westend
In the middle of Frankfurt am Main, the campus of Goethe University stretches across the grounds of the I.G. Farben Haus, built by architect Hans Pelzig from 1928 to 1931. At that time it was one of the largest and most modern office buildings in the world. Since this summer, eighteen monumental Corten Steel sculptures by the sculptor Herbert Mehler have been distributed there, managing to assert themselves on the lawn, in the architecture and in front of the Frankfurt skyline. Some resemble flowers, others fruits or underwater creatures. The exhibition, which will be on view until next April 2022, is owed to the initiative of Peter Femfert and his Frankfurt gallery "Die Galerie". The extensive catalog published for this exhibition also explains Herbert Mehler´s choice of materials: "While wood rots quickly and is perishable, metal - especially steel - survives these laws set by nature through its immanent strength and durability"
