"In 2021, Michael Burges has begun a new, impressive series of works, which I present to you in a solo show. The number of available works of this new work philosophy is limited at the moment. All the more I am pleased to be able to show you the first works and to discuss them with you."
Michael Burges reactivates the old, traditional technique of painting behind glass, which is rarely used in contemporary art.
"My interest is not in traditional painting, but in the painting processes themselves, which take place, and thus bears neither a personal signature nor a message. In my painting the matter is the actual actor. This means that I let the material perform itself through physical or chemical structural processes.“
The painting material is applied directly to the reverse side of the Plexiglas pane.
Through the added construction of a reverse frame via a special adhesive technique, this unique way of painting acquires an outstanding presence of a frameless, "free-floating" pane.

"Burges' reverse glass paintings have an extraordinary color presence and aesthetic precision. But they do not tell, they do not interpret. They operate with light and reflection, with natural forms and structures, with physical processes, with the emergence of matter.
In this sense, they are a painterly analysis and simulation of appearances, and at the same time an exploration of our interpretive, interpretive perception. The glass pane thereby breaks the surface of the image, is both separation and portal. In this respect, they are rather "painting-objects" that, in their play with light and pictorial structures, produce a kind of "visual sound" - the sound of painting.“
