Sculpture Günther Uecker "Bread" - new bronze sculptures in two different patinas

A bread (is) a memorial. This is how the world-famous artist Günther Uecker talks about his new nail object today. Originally he had made the bread for an exhibition on Eat art, 2002 in Salamanca. „Bread cooked with Nails“ is the name of the medium brown loaf of bread that the artist has peppered with nails -  baked according to the word. Some steel pins sit deep inside the dough, others lie flat.

Uecker's nails refer to the existential, also to the struggle for daily bread. "Freshly penetrated by nails from the baker," the artist says in conversation on the occasion of the new edition about this loaf of bread prepared for eternity, thinking of "food reason and torment, the grain grown, ground, leavened, baked in"

Until a loaf of bread is ready, from the ripening of the grain to the baking process in the oven, various lengthy processes take place that hardly anyone thinks about nowadays. In the end, most people take the acquisition and possession of daily bread for granted.

And only existentially for a few, namely for those who do not know how to pay for their bread or get grain.

The fact that poverty prevails in many parts of the world and that people are starving even in the rich city of Düsseldorf grieves Uecker deeply.
